A Green Wedding Fit for a Queen

Today is the last post from college guest blogger Dorothy Munholland. She’s braving her last round of finals before moving on to graduation and beyond. Best of luck to you, Dorothy, and thank you for your contributions to Glossing Over It. Hope to see more of your writing in the blogosphere soon! A GREEN WEDDING FIT FOR A QUEEN By Guest Blogger, Dorothy Munholland I’m only slightly embarrassed to admit that I was awake at 4am on the day of the royal wedding, anxiously awaiting the first glimpse of bride Kate Middleton, while at the same time conducting an extensive Google search on Prince Harry’s relationship status. I say only…

Mix Classic with Bold, Warm with Cold

By Guest Blogger, Dorothy Munholland While the weather tries to make up it’s mind this season, I’ve decided to put my foot down and get serious about spring. The winter boots have officially been put away and even though snow and sleet have both been on the menu in the past few weeks, I am no longer willing to wear a hat or gloves to class. Still, the inconsistent weather makes being prepared for all temperatures a must. Too often I’ve found myself wandering campus wishing I had just one more or just one less piece of clothing to battle the elements. With that in mind, it has become necessary…

    Here Comes the Sun

Chilly, damp, and dreary spring weather, you are officially banished. My spirit and my wardrobe can take no more. I’m ready for lighter, brighter clothing, like this floaty dress from Twigs (1925 Monroe Street, Madison). I would put it together with a wide-brimmed hat, classic shades, and a handbag big enough to hold enough stuff for a whole day’s adventure. The ensemble is ready for anything a warm day might bring: a stroll to the farmer’s market, an outdoor concert, or drinks on a restaurant patio or a friend’s porch at twilight. Never mind that this summer, I’m more likely be found waddling in flip flops and maternity shorts. (Just…

    Spring Forward, Stay Neutral

By Guest Blogger, Dorothy Munholland The transition from winter to spring can be one of the most exciting yet simultaneously exasperating times of year for those of us who spend the colder months envisioning our warmer weather outfits. There is nothing quite like wearing shorts outside for the first time in months, especially when you realize that you may have jumped the gun on sporting bare legs. Then, just as you think it’s finally time to shove the wool sweaters towards the back of your closet the forecast calls for… snow. Great. Fortunately, I’ve managed to avoid the outfit letdowns caused by unpredictable weather and closet transitions because most of…

Need a Prom Do-Over? Go Vintage

Ever wish you could have a re-do for your high school prom? Did you choose the wrong date, the wrong dress, or get too drunk off Dr. McGillicuddy’s? Maybe, like me, you had not yet learned the importance of proper eyebrow maintenance. Or maybe you still cruise past the juniors’ section in your local department store every spring, secretly wishing you had an excuse to wear polyester satin and sequins again. Well, there is still hope for you. Vintage Madison, a group of “like-minded ladies who collect, sell and adore vintage clothing” is hosting their first annual Vintage Prom at  the East Side Club on May 7.  And if you…

    Trendy and Transient

By Guest Blogger Dorothy Munholland College students spend a lot of time in transition. Between various moves from apartment to apartment or from school to my hometown during the summer, not to mention going abroad, I’ll have averaged 1.75 moves a year during my 4-year college career. This has made accumulating and storing anything other than wardrobe essentials fairly impossible. I love everything Jeffery Campbell, but it just doesn’t make sense to take up my already limited space with a massive pair of shoes I will never be wearing to class. I’m also not sure how my dad would feel about helping me lift boxes filled with wooden platforms every…

    Spring Fashion Finds Under $50

It’s official: spring is on the way! I’ve seen the tips of crocus and tulip shoots poking out of flower beds around my neighborhood. And the stores are full of spring styles. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to give your wardrobe a warmer-weather pick-me-up, though. There is a lot of great stuff out there for less than $50. To celebrate five years of  collaborating with designers on its Go International line, Target is reproducing some of its best looks from past collections. So if you coveted something that sold out the first time around, it’s worth checking to see if its available again. Here are my…

Greener Jeans (and a Guest Blogger)

Glossing Over It is proud to introduce you to Dorothy Munholland, a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her passion for “green” fashion led her to my blog and, when she pitched to me the idea of writing some guest posts, I was thrilled to add a young, fresh voice to the mix. Every Friday for the next few weeks, Dorothy will be posting here about eco- and budget-conscious style. GREENER JEANS by Dorothy Munholland If I had a penny for every dollar of the $340 billion that Americans spent on shoes and clothing last year, then I would have a pretty good chunk of money to donate toward mitigating…

    Vintage Love at the Oscars

I used to sit through the entire Academy Awards, from the red-carpet arrivals through the last acceptance speech. Then one year I thought, Who am I kidding? I only care about the clothes. Now, I skip the awards show itself and head straight for the press and the post-show fashion wrap-ups. There are usually a few outstanding vintage gowns on the red carpet. This year, Ann Hathaway’s ruby-colored Valentino got a lot of attention, but since it was from 2002, I’m not sure it really qualifies as vintage. She called it “archival.” Whatever it’s called, it’s gorgeous. Marisa Tomei wore true vintage, showing up in 1950’s Charles James couture. She’s…

    Fashion Week Favorites

My hometown of Madison, Wisconsin is known for a lot of things. Political activity, especially during the past couple of weeks. A thriving bike culture. Great microbrews. Fashion is not one of the things we are  known for. Sure, we’re got some fantastic thrift stores, and major retailer shopbop.com has its headquarters in Madison. But unless you’re shopping for a pair of Keen sandals or a new Patagonia jacket, it can be hard to find the latest styles. So I look to the the internet for inspiration. While luckily celebrities, stylists, and bloggers crowded into the tents at Fashion Week in New York last week (yep, I’m talking about you,…
